Rockwell Collins Launches eTES

BRISBANE, Australia (September 10, 2001) - Rockwell Collins is launching its eTESä in-flight entertainment (IFE) unit with first deliveries beginning in mid-2002.

Built on a reliable architecture, the eTESä in-flight entertainment (IFE) unit incorporates the avionics hardware design approach used in TESä and couples it with the fully tested and universally accepted Microsoft WindowsÒ software platform. The eTESä IFE unit offers airlines a smooth growth path to new functionality such as connectivity, E-mail and Internet capability to every seat in any configuration. In addition, eTESä offers full aircraft audio and video on demand (AVOD). It guarantees a stable architecture for continued new applications of IFE by offering the industry’s fastest data network available while reducing total system volume, weight and power.

"Our design objective has been to provide a system that is fully capable of scaling along with your functionality needs into the future," said Dan Bergen, director of product marketing for Rockwell Collins Passenger Systems. "This approach utilizes common technologies such as Microsoft WindowsÒ software, cable modem data network, and

PentiumÒ -class processors while adopting industry standards."

eTESä operates MicrosoftÒ software throughout the system with the web server running the Windows NTÒ operating system and the passenger-controlled unit running the WindowsÒ CE operating system. This allows for the rapid integration of an almost limitless number of third party applications. In addition, Windows’ support of universal developer tools enables maximum flexibility in airline branding and passenger interface design. Airlines that choose to offer connectivity will provide passengers with an experience similar to what they know from their homes or offices. The eTESä IFE unit duplicates this experience by dynamically building web pages based on the passenger’s selections. Passengers may view these selections from either the in-seat displays or personal electronic devices.

eTESä is capable of delivering AVOD to every seat in any twin-aisle aircraft. The digital media server unit stores 80 full-length feature films that may be randomly accessed at any time by all passengers. Passengers are in complete control of their video and audio experience including movie title, language choice, start, stop, fast-forward, rewind and pause controls.

"Like TESä , eTESä offers a variety of options in terms of the types of functionality airlines can provide to their passengers. Airlines may select from any combination of overhead video to in-seat video, to audio and video on demand, interactive games, telephone, intranet and Internet," said Christine Kunkle, principal manager of product marketing for Rockwell Collins Passenger Systems. "This is all introduced at the airlines’ own pace, as its plans dictate. This design approach and scalable functionality ensures the protection of an airlines investment in in-flight entertainment."

Rockwell Collins Passenger Systems produces cabin management and in-flight entertainment systems for over 100 commercial airlines around the world. The organization employs approximately 1,400 people at its facilities in Irvine and Pomona, California.
