Rockwell Collins Introduces Next Generation Precision Lightweight Global Positioning System Receiver

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (September 11, 2001) - Rockwell Collins has developed the next generation Precision Lightweight Global Positioning System Receiver (PLGR III) which is the first to be equipped with a Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module (SAASM). The first deliveries of more than 10,000 Collins PLGR III receivers will begin in March 2002 for the United Kingdom BOWMAN program.

This third-generation receiver is approximately half the size and weight of the original PLGR, first introduced by Rockwell Collins in 1993, and features improved accuracy, timing and receiver autonomous integrity monitoring. It has wide area GPS enhancement capability and offers fast acquisition, dual-frequency, all-in-view navigation, backlit keypad and display, and extended jamming protection. The Collins PLGR III radio interface provides the ability to send and receive position reports and other data through radio channels over-the-air or via satellite.

The Collins SAASM is a single, tamper-resistant multi-chip security module, which can be combined with other components and software into a complete GPS receiver. In addition, a fast direct Y-code acquisition option provides the ability to quickly acquire Y-code, even from off mode thus lowering total cost of ownership by reducing the batteries needed to support the mission.

The BOWMAN program will deliver the British Army’s next generation tactical communications system and comprises secure voice/data radio and intercom equipment, computers, a tactical internet and system management software. The GPS equipment will be installed in more than 20,000 vehicles, ships and aircraft, and fielded for use by 60,000 personnel.
