Rockwell Collins Integrated Information System Technology Completes First Flight Onboard Airbus A340

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (December 05, 2001) - Rockwell Collins Integrated Information System has completed first flights onboard the Airbus A340-600 aircraft. Developed to meet the requirements for the Airbus in-Flight Information System (AFIS) onboard the A340, the system is expected to achieve certification in the fourth quarter of next year.

Rockwell Collins AFIS system will provide the infrastructure to establish high-speed data communication links on and off the aircraft. Included in the installation are a Server Interface Unit and an Aircraft Network Server Unit to host Airbus’ operational and maintenance applications. In addition, the Terminal Wireless LAN Unit provides a wireless gatelink connection at equipped airports, to facilitate transfer of data to Airbus’ ground infrastructure.

Additional equipment for passenger applications is scheduled to be deployed in the coming months. This includes the Rockwell Collins Cabin Network Server Unit to host passenger e-mail and Internet capability.

In July 2000, Rockwell Collins signed a memorandum of agreement with Airbus to provide the Aircraft Integrated Network System (AINS) for the A340-600, enabling a wide range of applications to support flight and maintenance personnel. This agreement was later expanded to include the provision of hardware to support the entire AFIS system including passenger applications in addition to flight and maintenance.
