Rockwell Collins MultiScan™ Weather Radar Is Selected Worldwide
SINGAPORE (February 26, 2002) - Rockwell Collins MultiScan™ Weather Radar is gaining rapid acceptance from airline customers. Twelve of the world’s leading
airlines have recently selected Collins MultiScan Weather Radar as part of the avionics packages for their new aircraft deliveries.
“The MultiScan radar has proven to be a differentiator in competitions for new aircraft avionics,” said Steve Piller, vice
president and general manager, Rockwell Collins Air Transport Systems. “Our customers are recognizing the benefits they can
realize from this new capability and have rewarded us with a greater than 80% capture rate when the MultiScan radar is a component
of the package.”
The WXR-2100 MultiScan Weather Radar is the first fully automatic radar providing enhanced safety by reducing the need for
manual intervention. The system features Overflight™ protection, providing crews with the ability to avoid inadvertent penetration
of thunderstorm tops, one of the leading causes of unexpected turbulence encounters. A future enhancement to the system will
include a measurement of storm top height as well as information about storm cell development.
Cockpit workload is greatly decreased by the automatic performance of radar scan patterns using multiple-tilt angles and data
processing. This provides more complete information for weather hazard avoidance. It also optimizes short and long-range weather
detection at all times without requiring pilot adjustment of the radar tilt, and alerts flight crews during takeoff and approach
of potentially dangerous windshear.
Rockwell Collins pioneered solid-state weather radar technology for the commercial aviation industry. It was the first company
to provide solid-state radar, ground clutter suppression and Doppler turbulence detection and was a leader in the development
of forward-looking windshear detection.
