Rockwell Collins to provide WAAS LPV to FAA aircraft
ORLANDO (November 08, 2005) - Rockwell Collins has signed a contract with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to add Wide Area Augmentation System
functionality with localizer performance with vertical guidance (WAAS LPV) to the FAA's flight inspection aircraft.
"This agreement marks an important step forward in bringing WAAS LPV capability to the business aviation market," said Denny
Helgeson, vice president and general manager of Business and Regional Systems for Rockwell Collins. "This functionality will
allow operators a means to perform precision approaches in low visibility conditions, and also has the potential to help meet
future Required Navigational Performance (RNP) requirements."
Under the terms of the agreement, Rockwell Collins will work with the FAA to create a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC)
to add WAAS LPV functionality to the FAA's Aviation Systems Standards (AVN) fleet of Bombardier Challenger 604 flight inspection
aircraft. The STC is expected to be completed within the next 24 months.
The majority of the work will take place at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In addition, Rockwell Collins will be
working closely with the FAA AVN Office in Oklahoma City.
WAAS is an extremely accurate navigation system developed for civil aviation. Before WAAS, the U.S. National Airspace System
(NAS) did not have the ability to provide horizontal and vertical navigation for precision approach operations for all users
at all locations. With WAAS, this capability is becoming a reality. WAAS provides service for all classes of aircraft in all
flight operations - including en route navigation, airport departures, and airport arrivals. This includes precision landing
approaches in all weather conditions at all locations throughout the NAS. For more information about WAAS, visit the FAA Web
site at http://gps.faa.gov.
