Rockwell Collins awarded contract to supply Talon radios for Harrier

FARNBOROUGH (July 19, 2004) - Rockwell Collins (UK) Ltd. has been awarded an $8.6 million (£4.8M) contract to supply V/UHF radios to the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) for the Harrier ground attack aircraft.  The Talon family of radios incorporate advanced anti-jamming and security features that, being controlled by software, are very flexible in use.

The latest order brings the total value of Talon radios supplied to the MOD to $24 million (£14M).  The radio is fitted to a range of British aircraft in addition to the Harrier including the E3D AWACS, Nimrod Maritime Patrol aircraft and the Chinook Helicopter.

“Rockwell Collins has a legacy of providing radio technology to support the world’s military forces,” said Steve Banham, managing director, Rockwell Collins (UK) Ltd. “We continue that tradition with this delivery of the Talon radios for the UK MOD.”

The Rockwell Collins Talon radio provides normal and secure two-way voice and data communications over the 30 to 400 MHz frequency ranges. The system’s advanced Digital Signal Processing and Software Centric architecture provides an integrated system that is highly flexible, compact in size and allows for growth within the radio through software modifications in the field. Functions that have been traditionally accommodated in individual or federated pieces of hardware have been embedded in software, providing the user the benefits of an integrated communications system with adaptability to future requirements.

The system can be configured with multiple Electronic Counter Counter Measure (ECCM) options including the Second-generation Anti-jam Tactical UHF Radio for NATO (SATURN) waveform. The Talon is also capable of implementing the Single Channel Ground Air Radio System (SINCGARS) waveform in the low VHF frequency range and the HAVE QUICK waveform in the UHF frequency range. The radio can also be configured with the Rockwell Collins Talon country unique ECCM, which includes a Time Division Multiple Access Networking Capability and a High Data Rate Tactical Waveform. It is also capable of employing embedded secure voice, UHF satellite communications and other secure communications features.

The UK MOD, in investing in Talon, is enhancing its secure communications capability and interoperability with a broad range of allies.  In addition it is ensuring a growth path into Software Defined Radios that can offer improved flexibility and logistic efficiency.
