Rockwell Collins announces Enhanced Vision System development program for Boeing 737 and Boeing Business Jet aircraft

ORLANDO, Fla. (October 06, 2003) - Rockwell Collins announces the development of an Enhanced Vision System (EVS) for the Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) and other models of Boeing 737 aircraft. Federal Aviation Administration certification of the system is expected by December 2005.

The Collins EVS is designed to enhance pilot situational awareness during the approach and landing phases of flight at night or during poor weather conditions by providing an infrared (IR) camera view of the outside environment. The imagery will be displayed conformally on the combiner of the Flight Dynamics HGS®-4000 Head-up Guidance System, increasing both safety and operational capability of the aircraft.

“The ability to detect runway obstructions and lights in poor weather conditions is critical for safe operations,” said John Desmond, Vice President, Flight Dynamics for Rockwell Collins. “Collins EVS will provide pilots with the situational awareness they need to operate with increased safety in low-visibility conditions.”

Then enhanced vision systems’ interface will feature the industry’s first all-digital communication between the EVS sensor and the Head-up Guidance System, optimizes the IR picture for the pilot and provides enhanced maintenance and fault recording.

The EVS sensor installation, including radome modifications and EVS display, will be available for installation on some B737 models not equipped with the HGS. The turn-key package will include a provisional STC package, full operational certification, service bulletin documentation, radome modification, the infrared sensor and after-installation support.

Rockwell Collins is a leader in aircraft head-up displays. The company's patented HGS technology is certified and operating on business, regional, commercial airline and military transport aircraft. Aircraft equipped with Rockwell Collins’ Flight Dynamics HGS include the Boeing 737 Classic/New Generation/BBJ and military versions, Dassault Falcon 2000, Dassault 900 EASy, Dassault 7x, Bombardier CRJ 100/200/700, Bombardier Q200/300/400, Embraer ERJ 145 and the Lockheed Martin C-130J.

With 1,700 systems delivered, the HGS has logged over 12 million flight hours of revenue service.
