Rockwell Collins receives environmental awards

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (September 30, 2003) - Rockwell Collins has received two Region 7 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2003 Pollution Prevention Awards for Environmental Excellence. The awards were presented in the categories of General Pollution Prevention and Environmentally Preferable Products and Services.

Rockwell Collins received a General Pollution Prevention award for implementing a landfill avoidance program process which has reduced by half the quantity of solid wastes going to landfill since its inception in 1992. The program incorporates a broad variety of initiatives, including packaging reuse, paper and cardboard recycling, composting of lawn-care debris and unpainted dry wall scrap, and a move toward paperless electronic communications. The program also offers various training opportunities for clients at nine disability rehabilitation centers across the U.S. to sort clean useable supplies.

The Rockwell Collins REACT Center received an award in the Environmentally Preferable Products and Services category. The REACT Program refurbishes, recycles and donates to Eastern Iowa schools and non-profit organizations more than 2,000 computers each year. Since the program's inception in 1998, more than 13,744 desktop and laptop computers, 845 printers, and 1,116 office-related equipment items such as scanners and network hubs have been diverted from landfills and put into the hands of school children for technology needs.

The EPA's Pollution Prevention Program emphasizes the elimination or reduction of wastes at the source of generation. The award program consists of five categories: General Pollution Prevention; Environmentally Preferable Products and Services; Energy Efficient and Renewable/Alternative Energy Sources; Community Pollution Prevention; and Pollution Prevention for Environmental Justice.
