Rockwell Collins Certifies Head-up Guidance System on Bombardier Q400
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (October 01, 2002) - Rockwell Collins has received FAA supplemental type certification of the HGS® 4100 Head-up Guidance System on the Bombardier
Q400. Horizon Air, launch customer for the Q400 HGS, supported the certification program.
Developed by Rockwell Collins' Flight Dynamics business, the HGS 4100 will expand the operational capability of the Q400,
allowing Category III approach and landing down to 600 ft /150 M runway visual range (RVR), low-visibility takeoff down to
300 ft / 75 M RVR and lower-than-standard Category I approach minima down to 1600 ft/ 450 M RVR.
Horizon Air is currently installing the system on its fleet of 15 Q400 aircraft. The airline is a pioneer in the use of HGS
for lower minima, flying with HGS on most of the aircraft they operate.
"Horizon Air has provided aircraft and flight crews for five different HGS certification programs. We have also trademarked
the term Fog Buster™ and are known for our ability to operate during low-visibility conditions," said Perry Solmonson, manager,
flight ops technical for Horizon Air. "With HGS, not only do we get lower takeoff and landing minima allowing us to maintain
our schedule reliability, but we also have the important safety benefit of full-time head-up awareness for our aircrews."
